我在job板也问过，也没有高人来详细分析。
我自己现在在一个烂校（真的是烂校，不过也是某州立大学分校就是了）读cs的phd，现
在还在第一年。
其实我是对学术没有丝毫的兴趣，完全没有。过去master和今年发了几篇conference
paper，也是将就master
thesis的东西而已。我最想的还是找工作。因为我自己有一些web开发的经验，所以觉得
如果真的要找的话，花上半年一年的时间还是可以的（反正有TA的钱养着）。
不过现在恰好有一个professor说愿意要我去做他RA。我这个学校虽然烂，但是这个人却
是系里面funding的主要来源，他自己是军队出身，到我们系上来不久，之前都是在Indus
try混，似乎跟DOD这些关系紧密，专门作network security方面的东西，过去几年都是每
年几个million的funding拿，而我们系其他老师的funding大多数都是从他那里来的。我
跟他详谈了一次，感觉上就是他funding充足而且有很多很实际的project（恰好我自己也
是只喜欢做实用东西的）。 | s*****v

you have to do some certain thing after graduation. You can
do the PhD for whatever reason you see fit, and there's no
single correct answer to it. Some people might take the PhD
as an entry ticket to the academc world, since without PhD
usually you can't be a professor; some others might just do
the PhD because that's the highest degree available to us.
To the second group of people, PhD is just another

for example, it's possible for me to find some position like a software
developer, but a PHD will be over qualified for such positions. So for
PHDs, the carrer is different from a Master.
Let's forget about the carrer thing, no one knows the future.
There is another question: what's the difference to following a professor
without any funding and someone with a lot of funding and projects?

focus on your work.
BTW, if you are interested in network security (which is very hot), then
just do it. Whether you will finish it with PhD or not, that depends on
if you can find a good job during the time.
