Cary, N.C. — Cary police were communicating Thursday with a gunman who was
holding at least one hostage inside a Wachovia bank on Green Level Road.
Police said the suspect, a man wearing a purple shirt and red pants, had
spoken to authorities by phone, and he had not demanded any money. He was
holding a gun on one of the tellers at 10050 Green Level Church Road.
Susan Moran, a spokeswoman for the Town of Cary, said customers and the
suspect remained inside the bank about an hour after the robbery was
initially reported.
Four schools in the area -- Alston Ridge Elementary, Mills Middle School,
Mills Elementary School and Panther Creek High School – and a day care were
locked down as a precaution. Michael Evans, spokesman for the Wake County
Public School System, said classes had ended for the day at the high school,
but that students and athletes participating in after-school programs were
still on campus.
An employee at Kids R Kids day care, at 7580 Carpenter Fire Station Road,
said about 120 people were inside at the facility, most of them children.
Law enforcement officers flooded the area around the bank and closed
Carpenter Fire Station Road from Cary Glenn Boulevard to Green Level Church
Road. They were advising drivers to avoid the area. |
