CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A grandfather and his daughter were killed and the
woman's 1-year-old son seriously injured after they were struck by a
distracted teen driver in southwest Charlotte Wednesday morning.
The crash occurred at 11:35 a.m. along the 13600 block of Corsica Forest
Drive, which is located in front of The Enclave at Rivergate Apartment Homes
and near the Huntington Forest neighborhood in the Steele Creek area.
According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the child was
being pushed in a stroller by either his grandfather or mother when the
crash occurred.
Police say Ji Sheng Lu, 66, died at the scene of the crash. His daughter, 37
-year-old Jing Lu, was transported to Carolinas Medical Center and died
several hours later at 7:04 p.m. Jing Lu's 1-year-old son suffered serious
injuries and remains hospitalized at CMC.
Ji Sheng Lu lives out of town and came to Charlotte to visit his daughter's
family. Jing Lu's husband was working when he received a phone call about
the tragic accident.
Police say Sharai Bauer, 18, became distracted while driving her 1999
Pontiac Grand Prix. They say something fell on the floor and she reached
down to retrieve the item.
The police report stated, "As Bauer approached the 13650 block of Corsica
Forest Drive, her attention became diverted from the roadway towards the
floor board of her vehicle where personal items had fallen."
The victims were not walking on the sidewalk when they were hit by the car.
Bauer hit the family from behind as they were walking southbound in the
roadway. They were close to the right curb and walking in the same direction
of traffic, police said.
Investigators are still trying to determine how fast Bauer was driving. The
posted speed limit on Corsica Forest Drive is 25 miles-per-hour.
Bauer was not injured in the crash.
Immediately following the crash, Bauer was arrested at the scene and charged
with Misdemeanor Death by Vehicle. After Jing Lu died Wednesday night,
police charged Bauer with a second Misdemeanor Death by Vehicle charge.
Police say additional charges are pending the results of their investigation
.
She was released from the Mecklenburg County Jail after posting $10,000 bond
.
Neighbors say speeding has been a problem on the road for years and that
drivers often refuse to stop at stop signs at the entrance to Huntington
Forest. A neighbor told WBTV they had been trying to get speed humps in the
neighborhood since 2003 in an effort to slow down drivers.
