ranges of b.p., I assume gasoline is composed mostly with saturated
hydrocarbon and diesel partialy with unsaturated hydrocarbon.
The bond-dissociation energy of C-C is much larger than C-H, which suggests
that oxidation of diesel gives much more energy than gasoline.

vehicles. I hoped to get more input but unfortunately did not see much.
Anyway I will offer baozi to the first 3 IDs who tried to answer.
1. Composition: the molecular weight of gasoline (C5-C9) is lower than
diesel (C9-C18). So in gasoline we use octane number but in diesel we use
cetane number. They both contain alkanes, alkenes (refineries try to reduce
alkenes), cyclics and aromatics. Alkanes (including cycloalkanes) are
dominant.
2. Reaction: Both are combustion reactions, but ignited differently. In
gasoline engine you need sparking plugs to ignite the fuel, while in diesel
engine the fuel/air mixture was compressed to get auto-ignition.
3. Stoichiometry: Stoichiometric reaction for gasoline engines, while air in
excess for diesel engines.
4. Products: Both includes CO2, H2O, CO, incompletely burnt hydrocarbons,
and NOx from N2+O2 at high temperature. The difference is that since diesel
has higher molecular weight, some of the incompletely burnt hydrocarbons are
in solid state (so-called particulate matter).
5. Because of the above, the catalytic converter in the tailpipe for the two
are completely different. Of course I did not expect anyone to talk about
this point...

Diesel(including biodiesel) sold in in the US is almost purely hydrocarbons
.
There is winter gasoline and there is summer gasoline, while the diesel you
buy at different seasons is the same.
Some specialized gasoline has about 50% toluene to boost octane number and
performance.
