Due to government contracting regulations, U.S. Citizenship or Permanent
Residency is a firm requirement.
Luna’s nanomaterials research group is seeking a Research Scientist in our
Danville, VA location to support the development of engineered nanoparticles
for optical sensing, optical imaging, obscurant, and cloaking applications
in our nanomaterials group. Luna owns and operates a nanomaterial
manufacturing facility, conducts innovative research and develops novel
carbonaceous, polymeric, and metallic nanoparticles tailored to meet
specific requirements for various applications in the defense and healthcare
industry. The foundation of the nanomanufacturing facility is part of the
regional efforts aimed at attracting high-tech companies to the Danville
River District in partnership with private investors and state funding.
The candidate should have experience in developing metallic or hybrid
nanoparticles with novel optical properties such as surface plasmon
resonance (SPR) and surface-enhanced scattering and absorption, and applying
these engineered, surface-modified, or bioconjugated nanoparticles in
solving problems or enhancing performance in SPR immunoassays, SPR imaging (
SPRi), obscurant technology, and in vitro diagnostics. Knowledge in the
synthesis of hollow metallic nanostructures, or novel plasmonic
nanoparticles is required. The qualified candidate will be tasked to lead
research and development efforts in advancing existing technologies, take
initiatives in identifying new development opportunities within Luna’s R&D
competencies, lead proposal writing efforts, seek out new research funding
from federal agencies including the NIH and DoD, among other, and work with
corporate and division level marketing functions to support the
commercialization of nano-enabled products. Responsibilities include
performing laboratory work, managing projects, writing technical papers and
research proposals, presenting to customers, and attending conferences.
Responsibilities also include understanding the importance of experimental
results on the overall program objectives, delivering results under the
pressure of deadlines, and meeting material delivery schedules for external
analysis. The candidate will work in multidisplinary teams across Luna’s
four locations and with external collaborations including synthetic chemists
, biologists, chemical engineers, and mechanical engineers, and will support
the commercialization of nano-enabled products.
Requirements:
• PhD, or Master’s Degree with at least 5 years work experience in
chemistry, nanomaterials science, nanophotonics, nano-optics, materials
engineering, or related field
• Must be very familiar with wet chemistry metallic nanoparticle
synthesis, surface coating, and optical characterization.
• Understand the dispersion and aerosolization behavior of
particulates.
• Create and introduce new techniques to improve wet chemistry
processes and efficiency
• Provide significant program management functions
• Works well in a cross-functional, multi-disciplinary team
environment.
• Ability to investigate, analyze, and solve technical problems
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
