Hospital worker charged with murder after shooting in campus parking garage

A University of Illinois Hospital housekeeper was charged with murder in the
shooting death of his ex-wife, also a hospital employee, in a campus
parking garage late Thursday night.
Angela Bonds, 48, a second-shift housekeeper, was shot about 11:45 p.m. as
she walked into the Wood Street Parking Structure after work.
Earl Roberts, 47, of Chicago, remains in custody after bond was denied
Sunday.
The two had been separated and divorced for about seven years, Cook County
prosecutors said in court Sunday.
Initial reports indicated Roberts could be inside the hospital after the
shooting and the facility went on lock-down as UIC and Chicago police
conducted an extensive, room-by-room search of the building.
However, there was no indication Roberts was in the building at any time
after the shooting, police said.
Roberts was recognized by a UIC Police officer near 14th Street and Damen
Avenue about 6:30 a.m. He was apprehended after a short foot chase. A gun
believed to be the weapon used in the shooting was recovered nearby.
After the shooting, UIC officials sent a series of emergency alert text and
email messages to the campus community, advising those in and near the
hospital to stay in a secure location and keep doors locked.
An all-clear message was sent at 5 a.m. and the hospital and clinics were
open as usual Friday.
“The UIC Police and Chicago Police responded swiftly and took control of
the situation, exercising true professionalism as they moved to protect the
staff and patients in the hospital,” said John DeNardo, CEO of the UIC
Healthcare System, in an email to hospital employees Monday morning.
“At no time throughout the night were staff or patients in the hospital in
any danger.”
Counseling will be available to all hospital employees, DeNardo said.
“This tragedy has deeply affected many of the staff of the hospital and, in
particular, the friends and colleagues of Ms. Bonds,” he said.
A hospital memorial service will be planned. | d*****o
