Radon exposure (actually radon progeny) has been linked to lung cancer in

radon domestic exposure (5 pCi/L ≈ 200 Bq/m3).[110] This study lacks
individual level controls for smoking and radon exposure, and therefore
lacks statistical power to draw definitive conclusions. Because of this the
error bars (which simply reflect the raw data variability) are probably too
small.[111] Among other expert panels, the WHO's International Agency for
Research on Cancer concluded that these analyses "can be rejected."[112]
Most models of residential radon exposure are based on studies of miners,
and direct estimates of the risks posed to homeowners would be more
desirable.[106] Nonetheless, because of the difficulties of measuring the
risk of radon relative to other contributors—namely smoking—models of
their effect have often made use of them.
Radon has been considered the second leading cause of lung cancer and
leading environmental cause of cancer mortality by the United States
Environmental Protection Agency.[113] Others have reached similar
conclusions for the United Kingdom[106] and France.[114] Radon exposure in
homes and offices may arise from certain subsurface rock formations, and
also from certain building materials (e.g., some granites). The greatest
risk of radon exposure arises in buildings that are airtight, insufficiently
ventilated, and have foundation leaks that allow air from the soil into
basements and dwelling rooms.

This gloomy prognosis is delivered each year to thousands of Americans who
have been given a diagnosis of lung cancer caused by exposure to the
radioactive gas radon.
Since the late 1980s, a half million Americans have died from radon-induced
lung cancer, including a significant number who never smoked a day in their
lives.
Extended exposure, even well below the Environmental Protection’s Agency’s
“Radon Action Level” of four picocuries per liter of air, causes
approximately 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States.

Who dropped the ball? That was the question asked in 2010 by Dr. Margaret
Kripke, one of the members of the President’s Cancer Panel, after hearing
testimony on the dangers of radon exposure. The answer is primarily the E.P.
A.
The risk of lung cancer is orders of magnitude higher for radon than the
risk caused by other cancer-causing agents the E.P.A. regulates. The agency
’s own Office of Inspector General found in 2008 that the E.P.A. failed
over a 20-year period to notify Congress that it was not reaching the goals
set by lawmakers to reduce indoor radon exposure and that the E.P.A. never
seriously considered an alternative approach.
Now the agency has decided to throw in the towel. The E.P.A.’s proposed
2013 budget would eliminate all money to help states promote radon awareness
, oversee professional testing and reduce the risks of exposure.

机, 完全可以降到合格指标. 一般的买主都明白这个问题, 不会影响今后卖房的价
钱. 减气机应该是卖方装, 可是如果房子价格合理的话, 买方可以自己装. 一千二
百左右就可以了.

install a fan in his basement to let the air flow out. Radon is heavier and
needs many many years to cumulate to high level above 4.0 in some low level
place like basement. It would be 0.* after installing the mitigation system.
You need to worry more about your neighbors whether they have problematic
kids. That is much harder problem to solve if you are unlucky to have a bad
new neighbor. just my 2 cents.

This is the simpler of the two questions. A safe level of radon gas is no
radon gas. Radon gas is a carcinogen which causes lung cancer. The US EPA
has put it plainly, stating, "Any radon exposure has some risk of causing
lung cancer. The lower the radon level in your home, the lower your family's
risk of lung cancer." The average person receives a higher dose of
radiation from the radon levels in their home than from their combined
exposure to all other radiation sources, natural or man-made.
Radon gas is a naturally-occurring byproduct of the radioactive decay of
Uranium in the soil. Depending on your geographic location, the radon levels
of the air you breathe outside of your home may be as high as 0.75 pCi/L.
The national average of outside radon levels is 0.4 pCi/L and it is
estimated by the National Academy of Sciences that outdoor radon levels
cause approximately 800 of the 21,000 radon induced lung cancer deaths in
the US each year.
Your risk of lung cancer increases substantially with exposure to higher
radon levels. Lung cancer risk rises 16% per 2.7 pCi/L increase in radon
exposure. (World Health Organization, 2009)
Studies show that radon is the primary cause of lung cancer among people who
have never smoked. However, the absolute numbers of radon-induced lung
cancers are much larger in people who smoke, or who have smoked in the past,
due to a strong combined effect of smoking and radon.
What is an acceptable level of radon gas?
Radon Act 51 passed by Congress set the natural outdoor level of radon gas (
0.4 pCi/L) as the target radon level for indoor radon levels.
Unfortunately two-thirds of all homes exceed this level. The US EPA was
tasked with setting practical guidelines and recommendations for the nation.
To this end, the US EPA has set an action level of 4 pCi/L. At or above
this level of radon, the EPA recommends you take corrective measures to
reduce your exposure to radon gas.
This does not imply that a level below 4.0 pCi/L is considered acceptable,
as stated in the BEIR VI study. It is estimated that a reduction of radon
levels to below 2 pCi/L nationwide would likely reduce the yearly lung
cancer deaths attributed to radon by 50%.
However, even with an action level of 2.0 pCi/L, the cancer risk presented
by radon gas is still hundreds of times greater than the risks allowed for
carcinogens in our food and water.

Radon exposure (actually radon progeny) has been linked to lung cancer in

Most models of residential radon exposure are based on studies of miners,
and direct estimates of the risks posed to homeowners would be more
desirable.[106] Nonetheless, because of the difficulties of measuring the
risk of radon relative to other contributors—namely smoking—models of
their effect have often made use of them.
Radon has been considered the second leading cause of lung cancer and
leading environmental cause of cancer mortality by the United States
Environmental Protection Agency.[113] Others have reached similar
conclusions for the United Kingdom[106] and France.[114] Radon exposure in
homes and offices may arise from certain subsurface rock formations, and
also from certain building materials (e.g., some granites). The greatest
risk of radon exposure arises in buildings that are airtight, insufficiently
ventilated, and have foundation leaks that allow air from the soil into
basements and dwelling rooms.

This gloomy prognosis is delivered each year to thousands of Americans who
have been given a diagnosis of lung cancer caused by exposure to the
radioactive gas radon.
Since the late 1980s, a half million Americans have died from radon-induced
lung cancer, including a significant number who never smoked a day in their
lives.
Extended exposure, even well below the Environmental Protection’s Agency’s
“Radon Action Level” of four picocuries per liter of air, causes
approximately 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States.

Who dropped the ball? That was the question asked in 2010 by Dr. Margaret
Kripke, one of the members of the President’s Cancer Panel, after hearing
testimony on the dangers of radon exposure. The answer is primarily the E.P.
A.
The risk of lung cancer is orders of magnitude higher for radon than the
risk caused by other cancer-causing agents the E.P.A. regulates. The agency
’s own Office of Inspector General found in 2008 that the E.P.A. failed
over a 20-year period to notify Congress that it was not reaching the goals
set by lawmakers to reduce indoor radon exposure and that the E.P.A. never
seriously considered an alternative approach.
Now the agency has decided to throw in the towel. The E.P.A.’s proposed
2013 budget would eliminate all money to help states promote radon awareness
, oversee professional testing and reduce the risks of exposure.

install a fan in his basement to let the air flow out. Radon is heavier and
needs many many years to cumulate to high level above 4.0 in some low level
place like basement. It would be 0.* after installing the mitigation system.
You need to worry more about your neighbors whether they have problematic
kids. That is much harder problem to solve if you are unlucky to have a bad
new neighbor. just my 2 cents.

This is the simpler of the two questions. A safe level of radon gas is no
radon gas. Radon gas is a carcinogen which causes lung cancer. The US EPA
has put it plainly, stating, "Any radon exposure has some risk of causing
lung cancer. The lower the radon level in your home, the lower your family's
risk of lung cancer." The average person receives a higher dose of
radiation from the radon levels in their home than from their combined
exposure to all other radiation sources, natural or man-made.
Radon gas is a naturally-occurring byproduct of the radioactive decay of
Uranium in the soil. Depending on your geographic location, the radon levels
of the air you breathe outside of your home may be as high as 0.75 pCi/L.
The national average of outside radon levels is 0.4 pCi/L and it is
estimated by the National Academy of Sciences that outdoor radon levels
cause approximately 800 of the 21,000 radon induced lung cancer deaths in
the US each year.
Your risk of lung cancer increases substantially with exposure to higher
radon levels. Lung cancer risk rises 16% per 2.7 pCi/L increase in radon
exposure. (World Health Organization, 2009)
Studies show that radon is the primary cause of lung cancer among people who
have never smoked. However, the absolute numbers of radon-induced lung
cancers are much larger in people who smoke, or who have smoked in the past,
due to a strong combined effect of smoking and radon.
What is an acceptable level of radon gas?
Radon Act 51 passed by Congress set the natural outdoor level of radon gas (
0.4 pCi/L) as the target radon level for indoor radon levels.
Unfortunately two-thirds of all homes exceed this level. The US EPA was
tasked with setting practical guidelines and recommendations for the nation.
To this end, the US EPA has set an action level of 4 pCi/L. At or above
this level of radon, the EPA recommends you take corrective measures to
reduce your exposure to radon gas.
This does not imply that a level below 4.0 pCi/L is considered acceptable,
as stated in the BEIR VI study. It is estimated that a reduction of radon
levels to below 2 pCi/L nationwide would likely reduce the yearly lung
cancer deaths attributed to radon by 50%.
However, even with an action level of 2.0 pCi/L, the cancer risk presented
by radon gas is still hundreds of times greater than the risks allowed for
carcinogens in our food and water.

I think it is really sad (being a parent from this district) that this is
being made out to be a negative on our great school district. They are not
required by law to test and they do it every year anyway to make sure our
kids are safe. This school district will do whatever is needed to make it
safe for the students and staff. Why would you even file a lawsuit, they
have done nothing to endanger the students. As usual everyone is quick to
judge and jump on the band wagon!
