(a) Amartya Sen (1933- ) was recipient of 1998 Nobel Prize in Economic
Sciences.
(b) Not to be confused with New York Times book review, The New York Review
of Books is a fortnightly magazine published in Manhattan since 1963.
(c) The "total fertility rate" is the average number of children that would
be born to a woman over her lifetime.
(d) The article is lengthy. Please read only sections 1 (comparing India and
