professions in the States. The so called "service industry" is indeed
supported by the financial sector. As said before, more than 40% of
corporate profit is created on Wall Street.
However, the gain in finance is the loss in the real economy. Without the
need for the real economy, we all underdogs in the society; "Services"
simply suck blood from all of us. The balance between the industrialists and
the bankers lean to the bankers' side since 1970s, when the Bretton Woods
System collapsed and the evil financial derivatives were clothed with "
financial innovation".
With financial sector as the main "economy engine", the few elites get
richer and the rest get poorer. The government does not have enough money to
maintain the infrastructures and there is no strong need for this, since
there are less real economy players as the user of the infrastructures.
What we can hope for is that the country shrink its financial sector such
that more investment goes to other sectors, including the civil engineering.
The words "Globalization" and "Invisible Hands" are simply used to cover the
greedy nature of big corps. They use these as excuses to lower down wages
of engineers and scientists. When mentioning engineering, the management
always thought about lowering down costs.
Considering the high price in "service", there is indeed an urgent demand to
cut down its price. Why doesn't it happen? Because they monopoly the
market. Well, perhaps it is time to union engineers. We are not slaves. |
