After 11 years at their location on New Britain Avenue, the owners of
Szechuan Tokyo are bidding adieu to West Hartford and transitioning to new
pastures.
Paul Lewis and Yin-Mei “San-San” Huang, the husband and wife team from New
Britain who ran the Chinese and Japanese dining destination, closed the
restaurants’ doors Sunday night after a weekend of celebration.
“It’s not just an ending for us,” said Lewis. “It’s a new beginning.”
Lewis and Huang co-ran Osaka Restaurant on Farmington Avenue before opening
Szechuan Tokyo in 2000. When Osaka closed in 2006, the two turned their
focus to making the latter a “comfortable place” for their customers.
The goal was to introduce “chuan-cai” food – the essence of cuisine in
the Sichuan province of Southwest China, where Huang’s grandparents were
from – to the area, a concept unique to restaurants of its kind at the time
. The spot soon became known in part for hosting live jazz musicians on
weekends. However, music was never meant to be the driving force. “It’s
all about the food,” Lewis explained.
Though Lewis has owned or worked with at least seven other restaurants from
their beginnings to their ends, closing Szechuan Tokyo has been no less
difficult.
“I thought I’d be more hardened to it by now, but it’s a very emotional
process. We’ve worked very hard here, so it still tugs at my heart strings
once in a while.”
Lewis explained that as devout Buddhists, he and his wife listen for
guidance from the universe. So when the property owner wouldn’t renew their
lease, though Lewis said he was sad not to, the couple saw it as the
universe’s way of saying it’s time for them to “move on, do something
different,” he said.
While their time with Szechuan Tokyo and West Hartford is ending, their
ventures in dining will continue. Plans are underway to open a new
restaurant in Hartford’s South End, possibly on Wethersfield Avenue, though
nothing is set in stone as of yet. Lewis said they chose the area for its
potential and future; the spot reminds him of his upbringing in the Flushing
section of Queens and Brooklyn, New York, and he said he hopes that their
plans could serve as a “catalyst for revitalization in the South End.”
The new restaurant, though still unnamed, promises to be very different from
what people have seen over the past decade. The menu will feature mainly
Italian dishes, juxtaposed with a small Chinese selection, likely set up
similar to a tavern with a large bar. The décor will be retro-inspired,
with art and photographs embracing the Italian-American heritage in
particular. One thing that will carry over, though, is the jazz.
The process is “in a state of flux,” Lewis said, as decisions are being
made and, hopefully soon, finalized. If one spot doesn’t work out, they
will continue to search in the South End; right now they are just waiting
for a sign to either move forward or try another direction.
Lewis said he expects to have at least a two-month break before a soft
opening, probably in July. With their spare time, he and Huang plan to
travel. Some places they hope to visit include Los Angeles, where Lewis’
brother lives; Taiwan; Vermont; and the rest of Connecticut. Lewis said he
wants to “embrace and enjoy what the state is all about,” checking out
other restaurants “from Fairfield County to Putnam.”
But Lewis said leaving West Hartford is bittersweet, and the “rich memories
and friendships” made will not be forgotten.
“We really adored serving the public of West Hartford and sharing all of
their milestones.” |

是开车去 Flushing, 那时汽油还没有这么贵。 |
