running is quite different, because you can't coast, wiggle, stretch, or
recover, especially when you're tired -- as long as you're running, your
heart rate is pumped up.
and running puts a lot more stress on the joints and ligament for that kind
of distance.

Pain wise, yes, running is harder. ability wise, not really. Think about
your 10-mile TT. Then think about a tt century. same, you settle in a pace
and towards the end you hold on to your dear life. there is no time to coast
, wiggle, stretch, or recover! If you are riding with a really strong group,
sometimes not even time to drink.

still, the physical impact (shock from each step) to the body during a
30mile run is far greater than a century. also, with proper pedaling
technique, the stress on the muscle for cycling is way smaller than running,
because both legs are used during the entire turn of the crank. for
running you can only use the leg for a split second when the foot is in
contact with the ground, which is probably less 30% of the time.
i bet everyone on this board can do a century, but not everyone can run a 3

it's a lot harder than a 200k ride. I can ride 200k slowly pretty much
effortlessly. I haven't yet done any long run > 15 miles. Not to mention I
run more than I ride, time wise.

running a 33 mile is probably not a big deal though most ppl never do that,
but the fact he ran for the whole night solo on a whim is another story.
I wont do that, safety aside, the sleepless run is just crazy.

Sure, a 33-miles is pretty hard. but I just don't think this is such a big
deal. I almost felt that the amazing things people on this board did was
discounted. Trust me, the death ride reflects greater athletic ability than
some 33 mile run. and a 33 miles run is nothing compared to PBP (not to
mention GRR someone, you know who, is doing now), or an ironman.
This would be something that I truly admire. I used to ride with a old man
who had done it twice and finished in Kona twice.

I understand your passion about riding, but trust me, a 33 miler without
sleep is a big deal. Of course you can't compare it with an ironman. But
death ride, I'm not sure about that. I'd take the challenge of death ride
with a month or two's training, since I am never afraid of elevation gain.
Running a 33 miler without injury, I don't think I can do it, at least not
yet.

I guess my bigger point is this. he posted an interesting story that he was
inspired by a runner and did something that's truly something spontaneous

like I said, the story is entertaining to read, which I believe is all that
he had wanted. He wanted to share his inspiration of running for fun, be

But I think our discuss took it the wrong way. Henmei said he is NIU. and I

I guess it's more inspirational if it's a story from someone you have a
personal touch. I truely admire what Lance achieved, but it's way beyond
what I can possibly perceive. On the other hand, stories from ordinary
people like myself have much more impact on me. It's not Ed Viesturs nor Sir
Ed Hillary who inspired me climbing mountains, but rather people around who
would not be regarded as strong climbers by any standard that gave me the
most motivation.
And for a wild soul like myself (at leas

plus, I feel cycling is somewhat discredited since you can cover some

finish time.

Victoon may have higher standard for Niu
But just remember Niu is already widely used to make comments to everyday
folks here.
Almost everyone in running board is called Niu somehow by someone, but by no
means we are comparing ourselves to elite amateur, let alone pro.

due to its pack style racing, bike racing provides something very few other
sports can provide -- the strategy and tactics, on top of the speed. most
people race, not only because they want to win, but also because they simply
enjoy racing. it's like video games -- you get hooked on playing.
the closest non-motor sport to bike racing is short track speedskating and
inline skate races.

First of all, I don't think running 33 miles is nearly as tough as an
ironman. However, it meant a lot to me since I have always thought of the
marathon distance as the ultimate running endurance challenge. It is not

Ultramarathon is the ultimate form of addiction to running. The ability to run an ultramarathon is mostly the ability to endure pain (and not pass out while doing it). There is nothing more fundamental in life than simply being alive, and when you endure great pain, you feel more alive than ever.

first of all, tennis court is not simply a piece of concrete, not even the
hard court.
Secondly, yes, chasing a ball is my thing. Not only chasing, but also
smashing to the opponent's court. It takes a lot of energy, power, control, technique, skills,
patience, aggressiveness, competitiveness, confrontation, calmness,
confidence, frustration, up and downs, tricks, strategy,
independence, collaboration and integrity. All happen at the same time.

sure
But I have realized exactly the opposite throughout the years. That is, pain
is absolutely not the one thing that makes us feel most alive. There will
be a time that pain is no longer addictive and enjoyable. by then, pain is
just pain and pointless pain is just pointless. There has been at least once
that I felt no sense of accomplishment after an ultra event. pain, wattage,
and winning is just not the highest purpose of life.

I highly recommend Dean Karnazes' book. When he was running his first

ultramarathon, he failed to finish. It wasn't because he couldn't take the

The running record for WS100 is only 15.5h with 18000' up and 23000' down.
Even with the help of a mountain bike, I couldn't reach this speed. Japanese and Korean are excellent in this event.

hehe, they are both very motivating (which is hard to quantify and compare).
But for all the improvement I have made in cycling speed and power, I think
the greatest achievement I have ever made is rather breaking free from one
culture and embracing another, one that I can relate to and chose out of
free will. I think this may be a spirit shared by many Chinese emigrants,
athletes and non-athletes alike...

masochistic
