h******2 发帖数: 1498 | 2 What's the stem length for Thor and Tom? Looks massively long. |
b******n 发帖数: 1269 | 3 Probably 145 and 140s respectively. There are a couple of pros using 150s
but that's pretty much it...
One saying used to be: the one with the longest stem wins.
This is AleJet's bike when he was winning a lot... :-)
HM -- you are way way behind le... :-)

h******2 发帖数: 1498 | 4 I guess the reason why they use long stems is because they are tall but don'
t want to use a larger frame with a long head tube, which would prevent them
from getting low, correct? Presumably, using a larger frame, instead of a smaller frame plus a long stem, would improve the overall stiffness of the bike. So they are trading off stiffness for a better riding position? |

b******n 发帖数: 1269 | 8 It certainly is, plus having such a tall seatpost plus long and low stem
certainly doesn't hurt.

b******n 发帖数: 1269 | 9 You are probably right. Occassionally they hate having too short a front
center, so they use negative rise stems, but most people just have custom
made frames that are low and long.

h******2 发帖数: 1498 | 10 Just ordered a Newton Shallow, will let you guys know how it feels.
Now I realize that my current frames are one or two sizes too small -- they
are 53/53.5 top tubes. I'd like to ride a 55 or even a 56, with zero or 1
cm stack height.
One step deeper into poseurdom... |

V*****n 发帖数: 893 | 12 does your lbs offer rental service? maybe you can try out both sized before
you buy. you can also buy a $20 adjustable stem just to play with positions
more easily before you decide on a particular size/stem combo. you are
taller than me and I ride a 56.
I thought your khs is a 56, isn't it?

h******2 发帖数: 1498 | 13 My KHS was actually a 52cm.
I used to prefer the short-and-low position. I guess as my core got
stronger now I can afford to stretch out a bit more. My Cdale has a 53.5 tt
, with a 12cm stem. The new handle bar should give me at least 1cm extra
reach, and if I lower the stack height by 2cm, it will bring the handlebar
forward another 0.6cm. |
V*****n 发帖数: 893 | 14 as I have stressed before, any measurement of toptube on a road bike must
have a reference of 73 degree seat tube angle. 73 degree is a neutral hip
position for maximum power and comfort, one people shouldn't deviate too
much from. for our height, one degree generally translate to one CM. this
means
56cm measured TT length with a 73 degree seat angle is the same as
55cm measured TT length with a 74 degree seat angle.
if your seat tube angle is too steep, you should try moving the saddle back

h******2 发帖数: 1498 | 15 both the dale and pedal force frames have 74 st angle, that's probably why i
ride 53/53.5 tt and don't feel too squeezed. i guess the next frame should
be a 73/55. |
h******2 发帖数: 1498 | 16 btw, victoon, if i move back my seat on a 74 frame by about 1cm, doesn't
that create an effective 73 seat-tube position (with the effective TT
extended by 1cm)? in other words, i can create the same geometry of a 73/55
frame by moving the seat back by 1cm on a 74/54 frame. the only difference
would be the shorter wheelbase and more backward center of gravity on the
74 frame, which might result in some subtle handling differences, correct? |
b******n 发帖数: 1269 | 17 more like 0.7cm... but that's the idea. In fact the wheel base should not
change much.

V*****n 发帖数: 893 | 18 54cm tt with 74 st angle is exactly the same frame as 55cm tt with 73 st
angle. the only difference is the first allows you to seat more forward and
the later allows you to sit back a bit. and normally the first one is marked
as a smaller size with a shorter head tube. you should read this if you
really want to understand this.

h******2 发帖数: 1498 | 19 looks like the c'dale 52 and 54 frames have almost exactly the same reach,
with 1.7cm difference in stack. i should go for a 56cm frame.

V*****n 发帖数: 893 | 20 I think a 56cm tt with 73 st angle will suit you fine. and if it's longer
than you like, you can always use a zero setback post |
