Now I want to set up a database server either NT based or
Linux based.
This is for our group's research purpose. The requirement is
that every
one in our group can access it at least from the office
computer. And it
will store images and texts. We will have some work on image
retrieval.
I have a SQL 2000 on my hand. And I know that IBM DB2
Universal with
QBIC is freely available for research purpose. How about
Oracle and
others? And which server do you think is good for our case?

I think MSSql Server should meet your requirement quite well.

enterprise edition can be freely downloaded with no
limitations and will never expire. i belive you can also
get a commercial license for research purpose with $200.
it's support of images is quite extensive (it is included
in the Intermedia option). for more info you should check
out technet.oracle.com where you can download both the
software and complete docs. particularly

hope this helps

purpose, research or commercial) - and you can even
redistribute it free!
However, since you already have SQL2000, that's even
better:) Give it a shot for the XML support and advanced
data mining feature. I haven't tried data mining but my
friend working in Creative said it's awesome!
In my opinion, if you want your db server to be NT based,
you'll want SQLServer Family; if on Linux, many people uses
MySql.
