Cisco is laying off upwards of 14,000 employees, representing nearly 20
percent of the networking giant’s global workforce, according to multiple
sources close to the company.
San Jose, Calif.-based Cisco is expected to announce the cuts within the
next few weeks, as many early retirement package plans have already been
offered to employees, said sources. Cisco is set to announce its fourth
fiscal quarter results after the market closes tomorrow.
The heavy cuts, which sources said will range between 9,000 to 14,000
employees worldwide, stem from Cisco’s transition from its hardware roots
into a software-centric organization.

Cisco Systems' restructuring to cut 5,500 jobs

SAN JOSE -- Cisco Systems said Wednesday it will cut approximately 5,500
jobs in a restructuring plan as it moves toward more software and
subscription services and focuses on the high-growth potential from areas
such as security and cloud technologies.
Cisco said the cuts, which will begin in the company's current, fiscal first
quarter, would amount to about 7 percent of its total workforce. Reports
earlier in the day said Cisco was likely to cut as many as 14,000 jobs. No
details were immediately given as to how many jobs Cisco plans on shedding
in the Bay Area.
