I was born on a farm near Vinton, Iowa. I was literally born on the farm since
my birth occurred at home. My parents were farmers throughout their lives and
I lived on the farm until I went to college, and then returned to work on the
farm during the summers. My birth was not registered when it occurred and I
did not obtain my birth certificate until I needed it to get my first
passport.
I attended a one-room country school. For most of the years that I attended,
