标 题: Why the hell some people among us call him/herself Frank, Jack, or Mary???

I hate to get questions from American colleagues about why many Chinese like
to call themselves English/American names! Often following the question
is the comment that he/she does not look like a Frank, Jack, or Mary.
It's embarrassing, every time. |

what Frank should look like? Next time, just tell the
American that there are 300 million people in China called Frank and ask him
what's the population in U.S. He will feel embarrassed. |

feels good. It's essential to have people known my real name.
As a graduate student, what the hell for to use an English name? Unless a
graduate will never publish or give presentations, or he/she prefers to
print his/her publications with his/her respective English name as well. :P |

Shouldn't we each honor names given by our parents? If you don't, honor
whomever you feel like. I am just trying to make known it is such a
pity that some of us try so hard to please that they even lost their
identities.
that she or he has a Chinese name, I felt honored. And I know that she or he
must really like Chinese culture or languadge. So, go figure!

but this post doesn't seem logically sound to me. You've convinced me that
some Chinese give themselves English names for various reasons -- to make it
convenient
for them to be called by American friends, to express their adoption of

their identity: after all, one's cultural identity is controversially part

intended for the new comers and those who are yet to follow suit.
I want to let you know that the new culture that you are coming to does not
particularly appreciate you abandoning your own. It is definitely not that
hard for Americans to say a Chinese name. You will not be liked or accepted
by changing your name to one that only confuses others (and yourself). You
must bring your own stuff, and equally important, your |

个identification了。
好像以前有这么句话：大丈夫坐不更名，行不改姓。
当然，有人长大以后改名字的，多半是花名。至于为什么要给自己一个花名，就不是我
们这种人可以懂的了。
不过我知道一个例子，林冲买刀的时候，问那个卖刀的名字来着。人家说不说也罢，说
出来辱没先人。如果一直逼他非得说个名字的话，那多半就是花名了。呵呵 |

Not necessarily, try the last name Xu, or Xie, or Xiao, or any first name
with
"X". And the neo-classic economic theory is based on "Freedom to Choose".

don't have to like people's choice, but their freedom to make their own
choice
