usually start taking classes in summer, and start student teaching the fall
following the summer. So basically, it is the first year, or your second
semester.

student teaching not practicum? I wonder which state it is:-P

We will start observation, which we call field placement, in September. We
need 100 hrs field experieces, which will take about 8 weeks to finish.
After that, we will start our first student teaching (4 weeks) at the same
placement with the same teacher.It will end at the end of Nov or early Dec.
Next spring, we have the second student teaching in a new placement, which
lasts for 8 weeks. But usually, we will do longer than that, or spend the
first 1 or 2 weeks as observation to
