I need to build a small cluster (~7 nodes) for parallel simulation computing
. My first thought about this project is just to buy 7 PCs with decent
configurations (e.g. Dell computers $700/each). And then install OS and
clustering software etc to configure.
This cluster will be mainly used for my research and teaching. So ideally it
would allow 20 or more users to login at the same time. The computational
work is typically medium (1-2 hours).
My questions include:
1. Linux or Windows? Windows could be better for undergraduate students and
software compatibility (windows offices).
2. Some detailed suggestions for hardware configurations? Particularly for
the master node (server)?
3. A list of required items?
4. Would it be realistic to limit the budget of $15,000 for such a cluster?
5. Any other comments?

器的cluster可能会比较麻烦。而且如果不是rack mount的机器,你的这个lab/
computer room会看着很凌乱,机器之间不知道流量如何,否则还得认真考虑网络设备
,至少一个non-block的switch。
俺建议你考虑Cisco UCS系列,可大可小,从管理的角度看,就是一台设备,但是实际
上功能可以扩展到从几个到几百上千个CPU,买个中等大小的B440系列,可以提供40个
computing cores,根据需要提供各种virtulization。要是这个嫌不够大,还可以考虑
5108,可以到上百个CPU CORE,还嫌不够大,用fabric把多台设备连起来,提供更多的
CPU。

My 2 cents is buy cheap hardware, for cluster, check Rocks or Rocks

and you get what you pay. otherwise, no way it can rank #2 in only 3 years
after launched.
and many folks especially newbies don't realize when talking about cost, it
should be always total cost of ownership, which includes capital expense and
operational expense, in most cases, opex is actually more expensive, but
people can easily ignore it coz they focus on the capex only.

有个准备V阿姨的家伙,九百多拿下一套dual quad Xeon E5520s, 24GB RAM, 6x GBe
NICs, 2TB。

in 2nd/3rd tier school for a few year as a low end staff, the desktop could
be better fit for them. total cost of ownership is nothing since faculties
just use our staff/students for free. desktop machine is much more quite
than chassis/rackmount servers. they usually don't have data center like
corporate, they just put the desktop machine in a small lab or office. if
bbbeet is working for a good school and had lots of budget or his project is
very promising and may be grow very big, that could be different story and
