vendor.
In my understanding the original meaning of SDN, separation of control &
data plane, has died quietly. Except Google, who seemingly have implemented
their networks by strict SDN way.
Now SDN mostly means two things:
1) Network programmability. This idea will fly since customers like such
flexibility a lot. In such case networking gears will keep their brain but
can also accommodate commands pushed down by say OpenFlow.
2) Overlay network. This is Nicira's ambition. it has a future to be
partially successfully especially in data center networking.

question I have is, at what layer this "overlay" is on top of?
