Water Authority (SNWA; www.snwa.com) is actively recruiting applicants for a
paid graduate internship in Henderson, Nevada. The Graduate Intern would
work at the SNWA R&D lab while enrolled in a graduate level academic program
. The duration of this internship is tentatively for 12 months with a
possible extension up to 18 months.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES The Intern will provide field assistance and
support for current projects generally related to emerging contaminants in
drinking water and wastewater systems, evaluate preoxidation to reduce RO
membrane fouling, assess the use of ozone in water reclamation for
contaminant oxidation and disinfection, and develop surrogate parameters to
assess contaminant degradation and microbial inactivation. While the Intern
’s primary responsibility would be to assist in laboratory experimentation
for SNWA projects, there could be some latitude for pursuing their own
research interests, especially if the Intern and the organization have
common research interests.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Ideal candidates will have a strong educational
background in environmental chemistry and/or engineering and knowledge of
drinking water treatment technologies.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF: Scientific theory, principles, practices, methods and agents
used in the chemical or microbiological analysis and testing; routine
laboratory protocols and procedures used in the testing and analysis of
water samples; the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment
standard to a chemical and microbiology laboratory; the use of standard
laboratory glassware, beakers, flasks and pipettes; safe laboratory
practices and procedures.
ABILITY TO: Operate a computer and laboratory equipment for testing water
samples; understand and apply standard laboratory methodologies and
protocols; prepare accurate reports and records of test results; present
scientific data clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish
and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and others
encountered in the course of work.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Interested candidates must meet all of the
following eligibility requirements: Current enrollment within a graduate
degree program related to biology, biochemistry, analytical and
environmental chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental engineering,
environmental microbiology, or a related field. Current enrollment with a
minimum of three credit hours per semester or actively engaged in research
leading to a graduate degree. Available to work between twenty to forty
hours per week, Monday through Thursday (between the hours of 7:00am and 5:
30pm). US citizenship or legal right to work in the US, including
authorization to work off campus. A valid driver’s license and the ability
to maintain insurability under the District’s vehicle insurance policy.
