h**m 发帖数: 48 | 1 Especially in a teaching college
teaching Calculus for the rest of life
earning around 100K each year for the rest of life
Is it really interesting and worth all effort toward tenured professorship? |
N*T 发帖数: 414 | 2 making 100k for teaching only is not a bad deal.

一般大学的数学系可远远没有这么高的工资
教Calculus一辈子只需要备一次课就行了
羡慕

c****e 发帖数: 2097 | 10 i asked myself this same question before, and i visited a couple of friends
who took teaching jobs. my answer is NO, no matter how upscale a college it
is, it still feels like a high school, or rather, kindergarten.
for me it's no problem to teach calculus, as it's really best to not teach
anything at all, and calculus is pretty close to that.

c****e 发帖数: 2097 | 14 as you signature mentioned, Feynman loved to teach, undergrads at least.
he doesn't seem to have many known or well known grad students.
in one book, Dirac was quoted to say he had one student, and "he died"
I was told in former soviet union, there are 'professors' who teach at even
the best universities, say MSU, as their sole responsibility and 'scientists
' who never teach but work at the famous institutes (they do teach the grad students).
this cannot be 100% true, as many famous people seem

Pauli to certain ideas by juniors.
