Recently I recommended one of my Ph.D. studens A for an internship, then
another student B feels he should be the one to be recommended for the
internship. The reality is that A is the ideal candidate for the internship
position, and the chance for B to be recruited for the position is almost
zero.
As always, I tried to explain to B why A is a better candidate and why B is
not competitive for the position. But B still claims that he is better than
A as well as every other student in the lab. He even said that I should not
have discussed with my external industry colleagues the work that he has
participated in. As a matter of fact, for all the work that B has
participated in, I have given him all the ideas in the past four years, all
that he did was implementing the ideas in software and do measurement. What'
s even worse, he also wanted to graduate before finishing our original
research plan for him.
I knew B has the weakness of not being able to have a correct assessment of
himself a long time ago, and I have been trying to help him address his
weakness in the past years. I have been treating my students as if they were
my family members, even though I am strict on research. I feel sorry that B
behaves like this. He even thinks that his working in my lab is a favor for
me only, without acknowledging that this is for his career too. He also
thinks that I am unfair to him by not recommending him for the interhship.
Any advice on how to handle this type of issue? Should I still try to work
with him? Personally, I feel really disappointed about his behavior and
would like to let him go now; professionally, I still want to spend one more
year to help him graduate with a decent quality dissertation. Not sure if
anyone here has met similar students before? | x***u 发帖数: 11 | 2 donot take it personally,be professional. Try to work with the students
couple times. if it still doesn't work out, let go. | q********m 发帖数: 3234 | | c****u 发帖数: 584 | 4 Couldn't you recommend both and let the company to make the decision? | b**********0 发帖数: 53 | 5 I did discuss with my industry colleague the case of each of my student, and
he picked the one I recommended in the end. But the students do not know
this process at the begining.
Perhaps I should have asked the students to submit their CVs to the company,
to avoid any misunderstanding.

may change somewhere else.
No offense!
