No students, no postdoc, but it is independant, which means I can apply for
external and internal grants freely.
There is an AP opening in department B. The difference between the position
and mine is the AP can have students and postdoc. Salary for the new AP is a
little bit lower. And the AP position doesn't come with start-up package.
But I like the new AP position.
Should I go to apply for it without noticing my current boss?
I don't want to get fired if I notify my boss. And I am not sure if
I can get appointed by the new position. A lot of applicants have applied
for it.
What should I do? I hate my current job because I need to do everything
from scratch without any help from others.

AP has to do everything by himself!!! If you hate it, don't be an AP!
