PhD期间为老板开创了一个新领域,发了几篇重量级文章, 几年时间老板已俨然成为小领
域内牛人。因为这些原创性贡献95%以上为本人思路,老板非常不支持申请faculty,怕
以后跟他抢饭碗。虽然我以后肯定要开展新的方向,不屑于跟PhD老板争以前的方向,
但目前申请及propose的东西还是与前面做的相关。100%肯定的是,如果请他作推荐人
,他肯定会说坏话,这是有几个前车之鉴的。不知目前如何弥补。如果只有目前
Postdoc老板及PhD期间合作者推荐,committee问道PhD老板推荐信怎么回答。
Faculty这条路真的不易,遇到没有能力的小人也的确倒霉。

95C%怎么计算出来的?

I believe this will work out with 90% of chance if you try it:
1. It will be a very negative impact, if not making it totally impossible,
for your application w/o a letter from your Phd advisor.
2. Having realized that, this is how I would do if I were you:
a. start building a positive relationship with your advisor by remembering
the good things he/she had done to you, and let him/her know you appreciate
a lot from what you learned from your Ph.D. ( I know you claimed 95% of
credit was yours. But few faculties on this board could believe that. First
all, without the platform built by your boss, you probably could not even
start your work.)
b. This is important. There must be many directions/approaches in even a
very small/hot field. List 10 of them. Discuss all of them with your boss
openly. Give him/her the best few ones, and tell him you may take the hard
approach to crack the rest. Do redistribution until he is happy. If your
boss is a reasonable person, I believe he/she will not totally shut your
down.
c.So far you only have seen the bad side that she/he is trying to stop you
to apply for a faculty position, but inside all professors they would like
to have a few successful students stay in academia- this is something they
can brag about just like wining a RO1!

就是说老板在修改文章draft上还是有5%的贡献的。我说的这些贡献%基本上idea层面,
不可否认,试验的经费当然是老板的。但我后来也有了自己的fellowship,还帮助他写
了2个R01 (这个也是我draft,他小修),都中了。

如果不把拉钱计算在内的话95%。 一个学生从0开始搭平台做文章是很正常的。
当然在圈子里混了这么久以后,慢慢觉得拉来钱就自动拥有51% credit...

很多人对faculty这一职业都误解了。我的前院士老板曾跟我说,教授要掌握科研大方
向,主要拼得是管理和沟通能力。具体的科研是由学生完成的,教授可以不懂,但能从
学生那里学习(that is why I hire you,这是原话)。要象经营公司一样,管理科研队
伍。设想,CEO需要对产品有原创吗?学生就是employee,所有成果当然属于boss.等你
独立了,就知道why.

You have K99/R00 and HHMI (is he/she a NAS memember?) to help you. You
worry too much. If you don't have a reference letter from your PhD adviser,
just told your committee member exactly what happened. You should be
applying to school better than your current Ph.D. adviser anyway.

能在比自己毕业院校更强的地方当faculty的人不多吧。

Did you look at his old post? I actually think he probably has more
publication or at least higher impact publication then his Ph.D. adviser.

楼上飞越说得不错。但是也别太天真。学术界变态的人不少,有人就是一棰子买卖。一
旦得罪了他/她,你就别想活了。
如果是大牛老板,那学生彻底没戏了。如果是无名老板,也许你能试试看你的运气如何。
