it depends on univ/dept average. my univ trace average is around 4.4, dept
avg is 4.3. If I ask someone in the College's tenure committee (which I did)
, the answer is if you are all above 4, you should not be worried. 3.5 is
considered low here. but again, it totally depends on your averages. In the
middle is ok, below average is going to be a concern.
if your service load is below average, even your research is top of the dept
, it is still something you should work on before you plan to move up.
form what I heard, the dept wants your dossier to be a "slam dunk", that
means that you should have all your t's crossed and i's dotted. there should
not be anything that other people can raise a concern.
but again, every university has different criteria/culture, so it is hard to
compare. What we say does not matter. What matters is what your dept chair
and tenure committee chair think about your case. you should ask them
directly. It is their job to tell you if you are ready.

尤其是career已经是对education部分给了你肯定
但根据系的情况，dossier要好好准备扬长遮短
如果是比较和谐的系，人际关系也不错应该没问题
如果是有人找你问题，教学和service都会拿出来说
公立和私立也有区别

拿经费 publication record 够好 很重要 发一些好杂志。

the usual stuff -
[] have you received major independent grants?
[] have you published a good number of papers with your own students as
first author and you as last?
[] have you taken sufficient teaching and service loads?
[] have you taught both grad level and undergrad level courses and show a
reasonable student reviews?
[] have you had served on committees - dept level, college level or univ
level, and showed that you are a good citizen
[] have you graduated a PhD
[] do you have enough academic connections to provide a good number of arm-
length references
