ECE893 P2P and Wireless Sensor Networks
Spring 2010
Instructor
Name: Haiying (Helen) Shen, Assistant professor
Office: Riggs Hall 313-B
Office Phone: 864-656-5931
Email: s***[email protected]
WWW: http://people.clemson.edu/~shenh
Class time: 5:00 – 6:15pm (TTh)
Office Hours: 4:00 – 5:00pm (TTh); other times by appointment
Prerequisites
Although not an official prerequisite, you will find the programming
assignments easier to handle if you have some familiarity with some
programming languages, such as Java, C/C++, and UNIX program development
tools (text editors, make, etc.). I will expect you to pick up requisite
knowledge of the above tools in the first a few weeks of class on your own.
Description
With the tremendous advances in peer-to-peer computing and wireless network
technology, we will witness another revolution that involves observation and
control of our physical world as what peer-to-peer and wireless
technologies have done for the ways individuals and organization share
information. The major goal of this class is discussing and understanding
the latest research topics in peer-to-peer and wireless networks area.
Students from other departments (applications side) are encouraged to attend
the course also. Students are required actively participating in the class.
Course Materials
No textbook is required. Recent papers on top conferences, including NSDI,
SOSP, OSDI, SIGCOMM, INFOCOM, ICDCS, USENIX Annual Technical Conferences,
SenSys, IPSN, MobiSys, and Mobicom.
Workload
• Class: You are expected to attend all of the lectures, and
actively participate in the class.
• Readings: You are responsible for completing suggested
readings before the class discussion. Written reports (8) on selected
specific topics, companioned with a specified number of 40-minute
presentations, are required. You need to choose 8 papers including the Chord
paper for the paper reading reports. In the presentation, you need to
introduce the background of the work and fundamental concepts. One of your
presentation papers needs to be related to social network.
• Project: One semester-long programming-based project, which
can be done individually, is mandatory.
NO WRITTEN EXAM
Grading
Final grades will be computed based upon the following weights:
Paper presentation: 15%
Reports (8): 15%
Active participation and attendance: 20%
Project: 50%
Extra credit will be granted for particular clever or creative solutions
in the project.
Grading scale:
A: [90-105]
B: [80-90)
C: [70-80)
D: [60-70)
F: [0-60)
Policies
• Attendance: Attendance is an explicit part of the grading scheme
for this course. You should not take two courses which meet at the meet time
--- I will not make accommodations due to exam conflicts, etc. If an
emergency prevents you from attending class more than twice, you should
contact me. Don’t be late for the class. It will affect your grade for “
active participation and attendance”.
• Submitting Assignments: You need to submit 8 paper reports. A
report needs to be emailed to s***[email protected] by 11:59pm on the day before
the paper is presented, and also a hardcopy needs to be submitted in the
class when the paper is presented. Code will generally be submitted through
the electronic email box.
• Late Assignments and Miss Exams: You will get zero for this
corresponding part unless you get the permission from the instructor. The
timestamp on your files in the email box will be examined to determine when
the program was submitted. Late submission is not allowed.
• Collaboration: You are required to do the homework assignments by
yourself; copying their work will not be tolerated. Anyone found copying or
using another persons work will be dealt with under Clemson's policy on
academic dishonesty. The consequences range from receiving a failing grade
for the assignment to expulsion. However, we do strongly encourage students
to discuss the materials covered in class. There is a fine line between
discussion and cheating. If you feel uncertain about whether you are
crossing the line feel free to discuss these issues with the instructor
before you do so.
• Cheating: For the purposes of this class, cheating is defined as:
o Copying all or part of another student's homework
o Allowing another student to copy all or part of your homework
o Copying all or part of code found in a book, magazine, the internet, or
other resource
Academic Dishonesty: Students who violate University standards of academic
integrity are subject to disciplinary sanctions, including failure in the
course and suspension from the University. Since dishonesty in any form
harms the individual, other students and the University, policies concerning
academic dishonesty will be strictly enforced. I expect you will
familiarize yourself with the University's Academic Dishonesty Policy which
may be found in your undergraduate catalog.
Incomplete: I would hold to university policy on incompletes
