I had done surf fishing once from a beach of NJ ocean, using some very cheap
and heavy rod.
I plan to do it again in Summer, can anyone recommend a surf rod and reel
that is light but strong enough for some good size strip bass.
Also, I wish to use lure instead of bunker. Just want the challenge of it.
Any recommendation and knowledge to share?
I am thinking somewhere $250 for both rod and reel together, is that
possible to cover the basic function, light enough and still work. Don;t
want the luxury, do not have time to do enough.

But for surf fishing using lures, you will need a waterproof/water resistant
reel.
One good option within your budget might be the shimano spheros sw 6000 -
you can get it from ebay for about 135$. This is fully sealed and will be
able to withstand splashing and the occasional brief dunks. It weighs 16oz.
Another cheaper option is tsunami's shield -but I have no experience with it.
If you are not planning to fish while standing in water, thus minimizing
splashing, then you may have more options with reels having some good seals

I do want to stand in water, and my dream is to catch a big fish with
slightly thinner line than what is needed, so that I need to jump in the
water and swim some to fight for hours to tire the fish out,and catch it.
