Now most people think the first draft was 1936, but it was actually in 1923.
Back then there were 115 rounds because most teams needed to field all new
rosters from year to year. Plus, most of the draft picks never found out
they were drafted in the first place. Anyway, that year, the Duluth Kelleys
wanted to draft a prospect named "Galloping Gus Smith", 'cept there were no
scouting departments or highlight films, only word of mouth. Problem was
they didn't know exactly which Gus Smith to draft, so they spent rounds 45
through 53 drafting anyone west of the St. Croix they could find with that
name. Turns out, none of those Gus Smith's were the one they were looking
for, but the ones they drafted could actually play ball. That year the
Duluth Kelleys fielded a team of nine Gus Smiths which was a nightmare for
coach Scanlon. They only lost one game all season (to the Packers of course)
. Unfortunately the entire team caught typhoid and passed after drinking
water from the Fox River on the way back from beating the Rock Island
Independents in the their final match of the season. |
