Keeping the timeout to be able to kick a field goal is really important if
you can do it. So in those situations when you make a first down, we believe
clock it there so you keep the timeout in your back pocket. Obviously, in
that situation we're trying to go down there and score a touchdown, so you
want to keep as much time on the clock as you can. If the clock is going and
you need a timeout to get yourself in field goal range, you have that one
still available to you."
There is a difficult balance between trying to win the game and ensuring a
dominant player like Rodgers is left with as little time as possible. The
Cowboys used the final timeout on a fruitless freeze attempt of Packers
kicker Mason Crosby on the game winner. It's easy to second-guess now, but
even the Packers QB thinks the Cowboys played it wrong, leaving 35 seconds
for one final drive.

Several monumental Dallas mistakes:
1) Bad clock management on the final drive. Jason Garret wasting a down by
spiking the ball on the final drive. You do not want leave any time on the
clock for Aaron Rodgers. Lack of a sense of urgency to score a touchdown
versus a field goal.
2) Overreliance on Witten and not enough Dez Bryant on the final drive.
three straight passes to a TE on final drive...think about what T.O. said
years ago about the Cowboys focusing too much on Witten.."no team in the
history of the NFL has won a superbowl with a tight end as their number one
receiver.
3) not going to bring enough on final drive: no jumpball endzone shot to Dez
Bryant who had been killing his man all game.
4) Going away from Ezekiel Elliot on the final drive
5) no all out blitz on 3rd and 20 on Rodgers last throw. No blitz gave
rodgers a lot more time to find the open sidline receiver. Inexcusable.
6) Cowboys saftety Byron Jones quit on final pass of game as he assumed the
sideline out of bounds would save him. Didn't give enough effort to jump at
ball although he saw Rodgers throw it right in front of him. He could have
deflected the ball with more effort. Did not go all out to disrupt the play.
Jones was actually step for step with Cook until he broke towards the
sideline, for which Jones simply quit and trotted over without a sense of
urgency to disrupt the passing lane. Slow mo it for yourself and see. |
