Two Players Championship marshals, one on the second hole of the TPC
Sawgrass Players Stadium Course and the other a walking escort for Tiger
Woods, are disputing an account in Sports Illustrated of the incident
involving Woods and Sergio Garcia during the third round last Saturday.
Garcia claimed that Woods distracted him during his second shot at the
second hole when Woods pulled a fairway metal out of his bag to hit out of
the left trees, drawing a response from the crowd.
Woods said he was told by a marshal that Garcia, on the far right side of
the fairway, about 50 yards away and obscured from Woods’ view, had already
hit before he selected a club. Replays have since shown that the crowd made
noise when Garcia was over his ball, but not in his backswing.
Two Players marshals, John North and Gary Anderson, were quoted by SI as
saying that Woods didn’t ask any marshals about Garcia's status, and none
was given.
“He didn’t ask us nothing and we didn’t say nothing,” Anderson said to
SI about Woods. “We're told not to talk to the players.”
“Nothing was said to us and we certainly said nothing to him,” North told
SI. “I was disappointed to hear him make those remarks ... he was saying
what was good for him. It lacked character.”
Not so fast, say Brian Nedrich of Fleming Island and Lance Paczkowski of St.
Augustine, who said they were within 10 to 12 yards of Woods.
Both said the claims there was no communication between Woods and volunteers
are wrong and said that Woods was only mistaken about the sequence of
events.
“It is not true and definitely unfair to Tiger,” said Nedrich, who was a
marshal at the second hole. “That’s because I was the one Tiger heard say
that Sergio had hit.”
Paczkowski, who walked with Woods all 18 holes with a team of escorts, said
he even asked Woods if he needed any more fans moved.
“He said, ‘No ... I'm good,’” Paczkowski said. “We talk to players all
the time, if we need to in regards to their needs and crowd control.”
The claim that Woods didn’t ask marshals whether Garcia had hit or not also
is misleading because Woods never said he asked for help — only that he
was told Garcia had hit.
Nedrich, who said he could barely see Garcia, got a glimpse of him swinging,
then saw the ball in the air. When fans behind Woods began to stir,
Paczkowski, his view of Garcia blocked by bushes, tried to quiet them and
said, “the other player [Garcia] hasn’t hit yet.”
“That’s when I yelled back at Lance, ‘No ... he’s already hit,’ ”
Nedrich said. “Tiger had already taken his club, but we did tell him that
Sergio had hit.”
Nedrich said he didn't blame Woods for being mistaken about the sequence of
events.
“There was a lot going on, as usual, when Tiger plays,” Nedrich said. “
Then, he’s trying to have the concentration he needs to win a tournament.
It’s easy to get small details out of whack when things happen so fast. It
was an unfortunate incident and I don’t think either player is to blame.”
The SI article raised integrity issues about Woods, and numerous media
websites picking up the story on Tuesday used the word “liar” or “Woods
lied” in headlines.
Nedrich said that was stretching it.
“It’s disingenuous to suggest that Tiger is a liar because he got a minor
detail wrong,” Nedrich said. “Basically, he told the truth.”
“Tiger Woods did not lie,” Paczkowski said. “Was there a small mistake in
what he remembered? Yes. But I don't think it rises to the level of lying.”
Woods’ agent, Mark Steinberg, declined comment. The PGA Tour also had no
comment.

拿出杆子应该是可以的,经常看到有些人打完这一杆,拿出wedge或putter,一路走过
去。问题是这两人十三年前就结下了梁子。输的,不服气,时不时拿赢的那位调侃,赢
的根本不鸟输的。

They two didn't like each other, yet in the same pairing. It's hard for them
to play, but fans like it. I personally think Tiger doesn't do it on
purpose, but it's just a bad timing. Professional players don't have to like
each other, but they know how to respect each other.

Well said. 加西亚天赋没得说就是心理素质不行,n年前输给tiger那场还没缓过来,
后来被诺曼的女儿甩了也是一蹶不振。不过个看过一个专题访谈,人品不错。
