A man's camouflage clothing and beard apparently contributed to his
shooting death in a weekend hunting accident, Tehama County Sheriff
Clay Parker said Monday.
Larry Gene Pendley, 54, of Vacaville was shot in the head Saturday
morning with a 12-gauge shotgun on the opening day of turkey hunting
season, Parker said.
Pendley and four others were hunting in the area of Little Giant Mill
Road south of Highway 36 in Tehama County when he was shot by Stephen
Henderson, 50, of Fremont, sheriff's officials said.
Parker said four of the five had hunted together for 30 years and
Pendley had begun joining them on hunts 10 years ago, Parker said.
All of the hunters were dressed in full camouflage gear and had been
using turkey calls to lure the birds, he said.
"As you know, that's probably the most camouflaged people get of any
type of hunting," Parker said.
Henderson mistook Pendley for a turkey, partly due to the camouflage
he was wearing, Parker said. Pendley was on all fours and crawling
through the brush.
Henderson shot Pendley because he thought he was a turkey, also in
part because of Pendley's long beard, Parker said.
"It was one of those split-second decisions," Parker said. Turkeys
shot in the spring must have a beard, according to California
Department of Fish and Game regulations.
Henderson was using a 12-gauge shotgun with No. 4 shot, Parker said.
While turkey hunting accidents in Tehama County are not common, turkey
hunts are more dangerous because hunters usually wear camouflage
rather than bright orange, as deer and upland game hunters do, Parker
said.
He said the incident is a lesson to hunters.
"The biggest one is never shoot until you're sure of your target,"

让在树挂上朝指定方向开枪, 而且打了以后, 不能马上去找自己的猎物, 好像得在统一
时间去找. 问题是, 我要是打了只鹿, 随说是致命伤, 它没马上死, 跑了一段距离, 死
在别的猎人的区域里, 被人收走了咋办. 即使我跟着血迹找到了, 可那鹿最后是在别人
的地盘上又挨了一枪死的, 那是不是就更麻烦了. 上狩猎安全课时, 教员多次说, 打着
鹿后, 不能马上追, 至少要等半小时, 甚至更长. 要让鹿在不感到危险的情况下, 老实
歇着, 然后慢慢流血而死. 要是像牛仔追求的那样一枪暴头到好说， 否则按教科书的
方法打心肺区， 是不是很可能发生我开始说的问题，有什么方法避免争执呢？ | T******g
