The following scenario was reported to me by Bob, a long time family friend
who works as a personal lines underwriter with one of the nation’s major
personal lines insurance carriers. One of their insured homeowners sustained
a property loss at his residence, requiring the usual on site inspection by
a company adjuster to verify damages and work out the claim with the
homeowner. In addition to handling the claim, the adjuster is required to
complete a work sheet describing the physical condition of the property and
to report any unusual hazards he observes that might impact the insurability
of the premises. In this case, the adjuster noted the presence of gunpowder
and reloading paraphernalia in the house. This triggered an underwriting
review of the file by Bob. Bob doesn’t know much about guns, and the only
thing he knows about reloading is being in my shop many times when I am
pulling the handle on the mec and tossing completed shells in the box. But
he is a level headed reasonable man, so he phoned me to inquire more closely
about the safety of my past time. After our discussion, he said the insured
homeowner was a long time customer and his loss history was very acceptable
so he was going to sign off on keeping the account. A month later, Bob told
me the underwriting file on this account was audited at the next level and
his decision to keep the account was reversed and he was instructed to begin
cancellation procedures. So somewhere out there a fellow reloading shotgun
shooter has and/or will have to find a new company to write his homeowners
insurance, and all because he failed to stuff his bottle of Universal Clays
and his reloader under his bed out of sight. You may want to be more
discreet when your insurance agent or adjuster have occasion to come calling

麻烦。
