Dear Dr. xxx,
I am a xxx postdoctoral fellow in xxx laboratory at xxx Medical Institute in
The University of xxx, where I have been working since March 2010. Prior to
starting in my current position, I completed my Ph.D. training under the
mentorship of xxx at xxx University. My Ph.D. research was focused within
the area of xxx. As a consequence of my research interests, I have followed
your research and publications and benefited tremendously from your work on
xxxx.
Originally from China, I am currently in the position of petitioning for US
residency to allow me to continue my research career in the USA. The United
States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) expects applicants to
provide reference letters from prominent experts who know the applicant’s
research contribution but do not have personal connection with him/her. You
previously wrote a favorable commentary on one of my papers (or cited my
paper) titled“xxxx” for xxx journal in 2009. Because of this, and because
you are a leading expert in the field in which I completed my Ph.D., I was
hoping you may be willing to consider writing a letter of reference giving
your opinion of my contributions so far to the field, and supporting my
application. Having suitable references weighs heavily in the decision-
making process of residency petitions. In addition to the xxx paper
mentioned above, I have published n other first or co-first author articles
in xxx, xxx, xxx, and xxx (my CV is attached).
I appreciate that this is a somewhat unusual request, but I felt that
because of our overlap in research interests that you are an appropriate
