I don't care what WB does. His time frame is too long for me.

老巴以前多次强调喜欢资本需求少而又有品牌效用的行业, 过去10年间却似乎是在利用
自己的资本优势去收购和壮大资本密集型产业 (utilities, flight timeshare, now
railroad).莫非资本存量太大找不到好东东,只好退而求其次了? 这个发展方向和GE似
乎类似啊.老巴百年之后,继任者们还能够控制好风险,不重蹈GE的覆辙吗?

WB bought BNI not because he has faith in US economy, but because he lost
faith in US dollar. It's not easy for him to find a place to park his
money. Railroad at least is something real and not replacable. And it's
cleaner and cheaper than highway transportation. If other real estate can
hedge inflation, why not railroad?

Panama Canal expansion is expected to complete by 2014. As a result, Houston
will serve as a gateway for trade between China and America’s heartland.

for normal people, where should we park the cash?
I think in this board, people say we don't know what the trend is, so keep
the cash.

Agree on 1. Not agree on 2. Berkshire does not have a lot of businesses that

But on 1, completely agree. In fact, Buffett is late for the party. Bill
Gates' private investment firm Cascade owns 7% of Canadian National Railway
, making it the company's largest shareholder. (The Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation owns another 1.67%). It is estimated that Gates has netted $1.8

I've heard for quite some time that Buffet bought BNI stake to secure the
rail lifeline for his Mid American Energy. I think Sokol, as his most likely
successor, should like the deal. Berkshire is migrating towards energy-
related sectors in the recently years. It makes perfect sense.

This is very informational.
My 2 cents about the bet on American economy, I think what he meant is for B
NSF to soar, American economy has to soar. It doesn't mean BNSF won't get so
mething more than a fair share of it.
"Less import" is not in the scenario of better American economy. Maybe the o
nly way to have a better future is to be more efficient in more things, whic
h will result a "more import and more export". For example, there is no way
letting Americans go back to make socks again and

I just read about an interesting point on seekingalpha that WB
is buying into the railway business maybe because he is anticipating
the oil prices to surge as the recovery develops, and if the oil
prices go to $120 or even $200 (compounded by a depreciating
dollar), it's going to kill the US truck industry and potentially
force us back to a railroad-based backbone.

trucking industry can charge sercharge, which is set by gov,
so oil price high benefits ups/fedex a lot.
in 2008, the sercharge is about 25% of the total price for fedex, huge
profit.
the key for them is volumn, which is the indicator of whole production.
