is. but it does have one trait that other assets, even commodities, do not
have: its sensitivity to inflation (or any sign of it). since we are
expecting (at least it's highly plausible) world wide inflation in the
coming decade, 25% of your portefolio in gold provides enough protection
agaist the most likely senario. Gold is probably too high now and US dollar
is looking pretty solid. Therefore my mid-term strategy |

Even though it does protect inflation, speculation has already taken that
into account for many many years. Believe it or not, you won't see any
inflation protection when inflation really comes. Most commodity price is
purely determined by speculation.

My friend lives in Shanghai downtown area (lu wan district), and his home is
close to be removed. As far as he could expect, the highest price is less
than 4w/sqm2. And the new apts close to his area is in the range of 7w to
15w/sqm2.
Of course, I believe some one who has good relationship in the gov may get
much higher compensate.

就是自己给自己找烦恼。
我亲戚家确实这么陪的，人家是平房，开发商买来可以盖好几十层，显然还是赚了，那
个地段盖起来要一两万一平。最开始开发商赔他们3.5w一平，他们不干，联合起来当钉
子户，后来熬到5w，结果刚卖了不久国内房价就跌了，那块地到现在都还没有开发，哈
哈哈
再给你透露点信息，那个破房子是他20年前炒股赚的第一桶金，十来万，买了那个破房子

I guess people don't have much choice (short of buying physical gold)
if they are in for long term. You can't hold futures for 10 years - you'd
have to keep rolling them over by yourself and pretty much suffer the
same penalty.

我只是想说白痴开发商才会花那些钱去拆迁旧房，上海最好的地段都不值5万/平，无论
是新房还是旧房。

there was not and most likely will never be any paper currency that is able
to do so. so gold is "defined" to be inflation protective. the speculation

I grew up in Luwan district and so far I dont know any of my former
classmates have old house like that big.

Hmm... I don't know. The total amount of economic activities always
increases as the society operates. So if the buying power of gold stays
flat, that would mean that we can't rely on gold (or any currency
hard-pegged to gold) for conducting exchanging of goods and services
within the society, as the amount of gold grows at a much slower rate
than the growth rate of the scale of the economy.
