small cap, 20% foreign stocks, 30% bond, tweak this formula to your taste)
2. keep investing and DCA every month, quarter or year
3. Rebalance once or twice a year
4. do not pay attention to price fluctuation of individual fund/etf, view
your entire portfolio as one piece
5. do not invest in just one fund, unless it's a balanced fund ( a mixture
of equity and bond) such as a target retirement fund.
6. read a book of asset allocation or visit morningstar.
lots of fund pay dividend and other forms of distribution. an S&P500 index
fund yields 2%. quite substantial.
you can sell your investment within roth IRA. as long as the money stays in
the roth, there is no penalty.

| k******a 发帖数: 2436 | 5 :-) most of the things you said is not true, hehe. But don't worry, Both
Traditional and Roth IRA are good investment account types for retirement,
that means long term and high risk tolerance for most people. More
specifically,
(1) 股市上升多出的那点钱拿不出来reinvest
The (unrealized) capital gain is still "invested" in the mutual fund or
other financial securities.
(2) 原来多少股,一年后没有分红还这么多,只靠股价干涨而没有利滚利
This is not true. For example, if you are investing in mutual funds, most
likely when you make a purchase, there is an option of "reinvest dividend"
and most people select it. That means your dividend will be reinvested into
the same fund, resulting in fraction share numbers.
(3) 卖了就相当于从退休帐户取钱要罚款
This is not the case. Usually your IRA account contains a cash fund/money
market fund usually called the "sweep" fund. This is where your cash is
stored if they are not invested in other securities like funds or ETF. For
example, if you sell 1000 shares of fund A, the proceeds (minus commissions)
will be transferred to the sweep fund inside your IRA. That is not the same
thing as distribution (withdrawal). When you withdraw funds from IRA, you
will transfer the money to your bank account, that triggers all kinds of tax
, fee, and penalties, and you should never do it before you retire, unless
in emergency situations.
(4) IRA has great tax advantages. But mutual funds tend to have high
expenses (called expense ratio) known as loads, redemption fees, etc. The
better choice, in my opinion, is to invest in ETF. Even for a index fund,
compared to a similar ETF, the fund's expense is usually 10 times of that of
the ETF.
(5) The real disadvantage of investing in IRA is when you lose money, you
can not claim capital loss when filing income tax. But if you account
balance is high (say 500k or more), that is not a big factor. Still, you can
lose money with any investment.
