S**C 发帖数: 2964 | 1 It looks VERY VERY appealing.
Besides its triple tax advantage, even if you do not need to use HSA to
cover health care expenses, you can still use HSA proceeds for any other
expenditures once you reach age 65, by then the tax treatment of
nonqualified withdrawals coming out of your HSA will be similar to that of a
401(k).
In addition, you have quite a bit of latitude to take qualified
distributions from your HSA later on, even if you didn't tap your account
for health-care expenses as you incurred them but instead covered them out-
of-pocket. So long as you've saved your receipts for the expenses you
covered on your own, you can withdraw an amount matching your receipts in
future years, and those withdrawals will be tax- and penalty-free. You can
reimburse yourself for qualified health-care expenses from your HSA even
years later; there's no time limit.
I am seriously considering to give up FSA (too bad we have no limited-
purpose FSA option), take HDHP and contribute to HSA, pay everything out-of-
pocket and let HSA grow. And yes, save all receipts.
redsim, any pitfall in my thinking? TIA. | r****m 发帖数: 1204 | 2 Go for HSA and forget about FSA!
I can't find anything else even close as good as HSA!
For a simple reason - you will need to pay for Medicare anyway when you
reach 65, and when you use HSA money to do that, you truly find something
that is entirely tax free - from end to end.
I can't find another thing could accomplish that - 401K (pay tax later), 529
(pay tax first), Roth (pay tax first), ...

we will. Fee is an issue. Another watchout is unless you go with your
employer sponsored HSA, your contribution cannot avoid FICA tax, plus a
interest-free loan to the government. Well if your income is already over
the SS tax cap, that may be less of a issue.

你一分钱不用, 全拿去投资,能对你的 tax有多大影响? 如果有kids, HSA还能剩多
少? 你老太夸张了吧。

| S**C 发帖数: 2964 | 6 It is not much about current year. ROTH is only $5,500 a year now, but it is
after-tax contribution. HSA is before tax. As an investment vehicle means
you do not spend HSA at all, let it compound tax free year after year if you
can afford to do so, you pay medical expenses out-of-pocket on a after-tax
basis now, but keep your receipts since there is no statute limitation as to
how far back you can use you HSA to pay your incurred medical expense. For
people who has the option and can afford to do just that, HSA is an
excellent tax shelter.

| r****m 发帖数: 1204 | 7 Please make sure consider both cost and investment options when you pick
your HSA broker, ideally you want to pick one that offers low cost index
funds as an investment option, and you will put all your money into it, don'
t worry about it until 20 or 30 years later.
Never under estimate the power of compounding in investment world, even for
small amount like $6000 per year.
For example, if you invest $6000 per year, with average annual return of
only 6%, in 20 years, you will have $234K tax-free money to spend! In 30
years, that amount will grow to $503K, again tax-free!!! | S**C 发帖数: 2964 | 8 It appears HSA administrators is a good choice, $45 annual fee and 0.08%

care expenses,比如商场购物都可用HSA里面的钱?

plus income tax, after 65 years old, the penalty part is gone, only income
tax. So the worst case (or best case since you have little health care needs
) is like 401K or traditional IRA.

quite high for administration fee. HSA bank in this case looks better.
