GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Optical Engineer is responsible for the applied research and development
of bio-medical systems and sub-systems to be used in the development of the
Paratus foundational point-of-care cartridge technology. The Optical
Engineer is responsible for the design and development of new device optical
architectures as applicable to multiplexed chemiluminescent (and
fluorescent) detection systems. The candidate should be an expert in Zemax,
and have familiarity with CAD and 3D printing in order to facilitate the
rapid development of optical components for proof of principle and prototype
multiplex analyte detection systems. A successful candidate will also have
deep skills in MatLab, C++, and ImageJ. The position also requires an in
depth knowledge of laser diodes and LEDÃ￠??s and optical detection
methods (e.g. photodetectors, CCDÃ￠??s, CMOS sensors, and PMTÃ￠?
?s). This is an entry level position.
REQUIREMENTS
Education:
BS in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Physics from a major
University
Skills and Experience Required:
Ã￠?Â￠ Strong analytical and communication skills.
Ã￠?Â￠ Strong proficiency with Zemax required.
Ã￠?Â￠ Experience with small-scale optics (e.g. smartphone
cameras, CCDÃ￠??s, CMOS sensors)
Ã￠?Â￠ Strong background optical system design.
Ã￠?Â￠ Experience with plastics (design, fabrication, 3D
printing, injection molding) highly desired.
Ã￠?Â￠ Experience with spectroscopic techniques is highly

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities:
Ã￠?Â￠ Design and fabrication of primarily plastic optical
components and devices.
Ã￠?Â￠ Design, analysis and optimization of lensing systems.
Ã￠?Â￠ Design of complex optical systems to include lenses,
coatings, filters, mirrors and opto-mechanical components.
Ã￠?Â￠ Construct the design of complex laboratory experiments.
Ã￠?Â￠ Perform experimental testing, device characterization,
and data analysis.
Ã￠?Â￠ Design of optical systems for miniaturized medical
devices.
Ã￠?Â￠ Testing and validation of aforementioned devices and
components.
Ã￠?Â￠ Design and analysis of spectroscopic methods including
chemiluminescence and fluorescence.
Ã￠?Â￠ Contribute to the creation of innovative solutions.
Ã￠?Â￠ Assist with the maintenance, cleanliness and safety of
the laboratory.
Ã￠?Â￠ Interface and work effectively with multiple
interdisciplinary departments.

five-plus years of experience and requires IR coating experience. Both

Is able to make whole system connections and see the big picture
Is capable and willing to design, build and use optical lab setups
incorporating high speed electronics
Background in any of the following is a strongly preferred:

The candidate should be a self-motivated individual with ability to

Strong written and verbal communications skills are also needed for
