GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work
performed.
A research assistant position is available in the Department of Anesthesia,
Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and
Harvard Medical School. The candidate should be self-motivated and is
interested in learning and studying cognitive function, Alzheimer’s disease
, postoperative cognitive dysfunction and anesthesia neurotoxicity using
multidisciplinary approaches, which include cellular and molecular biology,
immunochemistry, and behavioral analyses. Under the guidance of a mentor,
the participant will work with team members with the focus of animal
anesthesia-surgery tests, animal behavior, immunochemistry, gut microbiota
and data statistical analyses, and manuscript preparations. We are looking
at a few different biomarkers to see whether certain patterns are more
present among the sub-population of elderly patients that do develop
delirium post-surgery.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of

Prepares basic solutions and performs base-level procedures as assigned (i.e
. – pipetting, cell and tissue culture, etc.)
• Maintains laboratory notebook
• Understands and applies basic scientific techniques
• Conducts analysis of results and may begin interpretation of
results
• Sets up and prepares routine experiments as directed, including
animal anesthesia, surgery, and behavior studies
• Prepares lab reagents, chemicals, instruments and equipment
• May perform independent literature searches
• Assists with organizing materials for publication or presentation
• Maintains and orders supplies
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: Must be realistic, objective,
measurable and related to essential functions of this job.
• Ability to work independently and as a team member
• Good communication skills
• Computer literacy
• Working knowledge of clinical research protocols
• Ability to perform multiple tasks independently
EDUCATION: Specify minimum education and clearly indicate if preferred or
required
Bachelor’s degree required.
Neuroscience, Cell Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, Biomedical Engineering
, Bioinformatics or in a related field.
EXPERIENCE: Specify minimum creditable years of experience and clearly
indicate if preferred or required
New graduates with some lab experience (via course work, internships, etc.)
or those without any prior research experience will be considered for the
Research Technician I position outlined above.
