http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity_of_Earth
In combination, the equatorial bulge and the effects of the Earth's inertia
mean that sea-level gravitational acceleration increases from about 9.780 m
·s−2 at the Equator to about 9.832 m·s−2 at the poles, so an
object will weigh about 0.5% more at the poles than at the Equator |

When you're 140 km below the surface, g != 10m/s^2 either. Do you expect to
have infinite gravity at the center of a planet? When you go below the
surface towards the center of the earth, gravitational acceleration actually
DECREASES instead of increases due to the Shell theorem. You're subject to
the gravity of a much smaller planet.
At 140km, g would be equal to approximately 9.81*(6370-140)/6370=9.59m/s^2.
