母上不就得了？还非得弄个地面机场才行？美军之所以威慑力大，就是因为几大航母战

While this may look like a gag shot, it is actually a "transport of a
transport" necessity. The B-52 was in Beirut, Lebanon undergoing routine
fuel tank cleaning. Workmen accidently damaged the bladder system and had to
install the bladders from smaller C-130s temporarily. The plane was flown
to nearby McCollough air base where it was lifted upon a barge bound for
Tyre on the Mediterranean. Once there it was off-loaded onto the carrier
deck for transport to Crete where the appropriate tank bladders were
installed. It was then flown back to Beirut. Military cooperation in action. |

by comparing known measurements of a B-52 and the USS Nimitz [CVN 68]. The B
-52 is placed right on the beam of the Nimitz and spans the entire flight
deck. The wingspan of a B-52 is 185 ft. The beam of the Nimitz is 252 ft. If
done to actual scale, the B-52's wingspan would only cover about 75% of the
width of the deck. |

off and land on an Aircraft Carrier.
In November 1963 as part of a test study as to the feasibility of large
scale Carrier On Board Delivery using large cargo planes, a C-130 cargo
plane made a series of test landing and take offs onboard the USS Forrestal.
The USS Forrestal is only slightly smaller then the USS Nimitz shown in the
photo (238 foot maximum beam vice 252 feet). As comparison a B-52 has a
wingspan of 185 feet while the C-130 has a wingspan of 133 feet. |

dividing the cockpit side window is a dead giveaway. A very few X-Wings did
see combat in the Pacific, but in 1943, most of them were in action over
Italy. It's little details like that which keep us on our toes! |
