I did watch the inauguration speech of President Obama. Public opinion and
attitudes towards LGBT people have been changing very rapidly over the past
decade, and especially the last few years. President Obama's decision to
mention Stonewall in the same sentence as Seneca Falls and Selma in his
inauguration speech is a testament to this change. In the last four years,
full and strong support of gay rights (icnluding marriage) has become a
default position of the Democratic Party; now almost every Democratic
politician has this view, and crucially - they campaign on it too. The
Democrats have come to believe that not only it is not risky to support gay
rights, but that by doing so they will actually get more votes and be more
easily elected. In the coming years Republicans will slowly move in this
direction too, just like the conservatives did in the UK (in Britain by now
all major parties support full equality, including the Conservative Party
which is in power right now, whereas some five years ago even the liberal
Labour Party was not fully supportive). So President Obama did not take any
political risk by throwing his full weight behind the equality campaign; if
anything he did a huge favor to himself by doing this, as becoming the first
president to support full equality for gay Americans and to be so vocal
about it enables him to embellish his image. Also, since he declared his
support for marriage equality months before the November election and was
still reelected by a comfortable majority, he figures that he has nothing to
lose. He is now working on his legacy, and being remembered as the first
president to do this will look great on his legacy summary.
But even in these difficult regions things are starting to change too.
Easter Europe (save for Russian and Belarus, and possibly Ukraine) are
slowly converging with the rest of Europe on such issues. In Asia, Taiwan is
by far leading the way in the struggle for full legal and social equality;
I've noticed that there have been some positive developments also in Hong
Kong, South Korea, Japan and even in the authoritarian Singapore. I suspect
that Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam will over the years slowly become
more accepting too. Japan is notoriously behind, especially taking into
account its level of development and prosperity.
Some historians of sociology have recently declared that the gay rights
movement has become the most successful social inclusion movement. They say
that after all, it took decades and centuries of open struggle to reach
social and legal equality for women and racial and religious minorities. By
contrast, the contemporary gay rights movement in the US started in the 1960
, and really after the Stonewall Uprising in 1969. The last decade has been
especially successfull. There is some truth to this argument.
I'm thrilled that you're thinking of more actively engagining in these
issues. I mean I've always known that your natural instinct and moral is to
feel empathy for the opressed and to take a stand where you can. Of course
we're all humans and we all have prejudices to some degree, but my guiding
principal has been to challenge these prejudices in me and in others; to
help fight the social stigma. This can be done in so many different ways,
including in such subtle ways as espressing an opinion during a conversation
with others. So youve always been on the side of social justice, I'm just
glad that you're becoming more confident and open about your stance. |
