Hi,
Did anyone change visa to F1 in order to go to law school recently?
How long does it take to get the F1 after you submit the status change
application nowadays?
Did you include a bank statement (or the equivalent) to support your
financial situation? If yes, how much did you have on the statement, enough
to cover one year's expense or triple the amount on the I-20 to cover 3
years?
I don't know how things will turn out differently between changing status in
the states and applying at the cou

I take it as you're trying to help me. Thanks. I did my homework though, but
didn't find the immigration board to be particularly helpful.
Now, there is a reason why this board has its own collection of Visa issues
in its "Jing Hua Qu". But all I find is people with LLM cases who applied
visa in China. I am trying to get in for JD on F1 this summer, and I believe
, without a green card, I belong to a very small pool of people who are
struggling to clear their way to law school. I also believe

Not every Chinese JD has a green card although a lot of them do. You should
first contact your International Office where you will get at least a check
list of what you will need to send to USCIS.
A Bank Statement is required, I think. But it only needs to show your
capability to support your 1st year's study (as required by the law).
A Cover Letter might be necessary to clarify your immigration history. Keep
it short.
I-20, SEVIS Fee Receipt and I-539, of course.

Thanks a lot for the info. It is the bank statement that I am not sure about
the most. The school does have a fit-all check list, the specific things
you mentioned are very helpful.
Just out of curiosity, how many chinese JD's who did NOT have a law
background do you think have gone to school without first getting a green
card? My guess is very few. And a large portion of them, I think, switch to
law while they are at graduate school. H1b holders like myself, who
actively quit their jobs and g

Well, how do I say. You are definitely not insane. I will possibly be in the
same boat as you are in a couple of years. If you really want to get into
the law, just go for it. Never let GC hamper you.

This is a question that has been debated for a long long time. I agree with
someone on this bbs that if you are really smart and are among the top of
your field, who cares whether you have GC. I believe there are someone out
there who has GC but cann't land a single job, and there are also someone
out there who has no GC but has received multiple offers.

It is true that GC is not a indication of whether you can land a job or not.
Let's focus on law school, the perhaps most expensive professional training
to get you qualified for a legal job. The fact is, you will have a lot less
to worry about (e.g. visa, loan, tuition in some case) when you have a
green card.
On the other hand, you buy your some time by giving up all the soft-landing
options.

Ok, if one got multiple offers without GC, should he still work on getting a
GC later on?
If not, he has a maximum of 6 years, so he has to leave right before making
a partner. :)
If yes, how difficult is it when one already works in the law area? Does he
have to wait in lines with the EB2/EB3 category?

If I were in your situation, maintaining the job in the firm would be the
first priority, especially if you don't have a spouse applying for green
card and you want to stay. Of course, going to school full time and
securing JD quickly buys you time in the long run.
