but eclipse has become a bloatware anyway, so 3-year old version might be
more useful...

Sure, if you run it on windows. :)
On jaunty, I always have it crashed seconds after the splash appears.
I even have a looooong log for it.

Well, google ubuntu eclipse, there is a bug launchpad entry that explains
why it has an 3 years old eclipse.
Bloatware or not, it is still the best web development "IDE" I found so far.

Let me guess - jdk licensing issues?
far.
But why _don't_ you download eclipse directly?
All of my development tools I install them myself
for the exact reason that I don't want to be
confined by the repositories.

Well install the jdk yourself too. :)
Jdk 6 64 bit + eclipse galileo 64bit works fine for me.
