My comment:
(a) In the print, ther eis another illustration from the book, other than
the cover. That particular illustration has a group of kids who gather
together as if for a group photo. Two of the kids have the same heights and
clothes as the two in the cover.
(b) The title of the book: For thee I sing; A letter to my daughters.
The "thee" is second-person, objective, singular, informal for "thou." See
the table in
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thee
"Of Thee I sing"--as well as "Of thee we sing"--is part of lyrics of the
previopusly de facto national anthem of United States:
My Country, 'Tis of Thee

Therefore, both in that song and in Obama's book, the "thee" in "Of Thee I
sing" refers to United States. It can be the thirteen personages in Obama's
book, as thee can not be plural. | c**i 发帖数: 6973 | 2 I am sorry.
Regarding the last sentence from my original posting, "It can be the
thirteen personages in Obama's book, as thee can not be plural."
I missed a "not"--it should be "It can NOT be * * * | E**s 发帖数: 514 | |
