s****y 发帖数: 267 | 2 natural stone/tumbled marble? Yes. Seal is needed. But there are also
travertine look tiles which are indeed porcelain. |
g*****9 发帖数: 4125 | 3 Yes, it is always best to seal before you grout, and I like to seal it at
least one more time after you grout. Any solvent based Impregnator should be
ok, I will contine to apply it until it can no longer be soaked in. I found
tec brand stuff to be reasonably priced and almost as good as the high
dollar stuff. Only advice I can tell you is to stay away from sealer sold at
HD or Lowes, they are no good at all (maybe ok for ceramic tile)

w********l 发帖数: 55 | 5 For travertine stones, most people use stone enhencer as sealer because it
can show the real color of the stone. Use it before and after grouting. Only
~5% people use regular sealer. |
w*****g 发帖数: 339 | 6 Does stone enhancer change the color? |
g*****9 发帖数: 4125 | 7 Yes and no. Depend on the color of travertine and how it was finished, but
most of them will create a what I called "wet" look.
First of all, is your travertine filled or unfilled? Has it been polished,
tumbled? If unfilled, do you plan to fill it with grout? what color (most
common are grey to coral-red, but I have seen some pure white one). Where
does it come from (most cheap one on the market are from Turkey and near by)
If the travertine has been resin filled and polished to a smooth and shi

w*****g 发帖数: 339 | 8 The 12"x12" travertine tiles I bought are made in Turkey. They are honed,
filled and in ivory color. Smooth but not as shiny as ones with polished
finish. I use these tiles in kitchen, bathroom and laundry room. My
contractor is gonna install them with 1/16" grout.
Do I still need sealer and which one? I am not sure whether wet look and
color change are good. I bought a 1-quart Miracal Impregnator at HD around $
32. Is it okay? Or I can go to tile specialty store and buy some better

S********a 发帖数: 14 | 9 All natural stones are porous and need sealer. It does not matter what kind
of stone or finish (tumbled, brushed,polished,filled...), even though some
stone are more porous than others, like travertine vs granite.
Applying sealer before grouting prevent the stone from absorbing the grout
color. Some people skip this step because people usually pick a grout color
simillar to the stone, and only apply sealer
after the installation is done.
One exception is some stones are pre-sealed at the facto |

Product 104 SB (Impregnating Sealer)
This is not as good as the above kind, but still very good and avail in
smaller size.

Lastly Miracle also makes a Ok product (still very good, but just not as
good as the 2 above) and is available at HD. They have an impregnator called
511 impregnator

g*****9 发帖数: 4125 | 12 I am in east coast (near DC), and would not consider myself a guru, but I
have been importing natural stone material from all over the world (
including travertine) for quite a few years now. Travertine is a very dense
material, polished or honed finish really does not need to be sealed (but
can not hurt if you have kids or pets at home). Glad I can help, feel free
to ask anytime. I never went to any trade school, but learn a little over
time from talking to interior designer, architect, install
