14763 | 12 Hehe, a common amateur mistake is matching the wood filler to the original
color of wood. The right way is to match to the stained wood.
Another pro tip, it seems you already knew using wood-filler before applying
the paint, but in case of stain? Do it after stain (of course, before
vanish : ) )
The reason is very simple, wood-filler can't stick to paint well, that's why
you need to use wood-filler on bare wood before paint (or vanish), but a
good wood stain only penetrates wood and the surface after the stain is
still friendly to woodfiller, so, you can still apply wood-filler after the
stain. In this way, you can match the color/shade of wood-filler exactly to
the color of stained wood.

| m***y 发帖数: 14763 | 13 Another trick, if you can't find a perfect match, you better choose a darker
shade for wood filler. To human eyes, a few darker spots on the wood wouldn't
stand out.

| m***y 发帖数: 14763 | 15 While we are on it, here's what I really do. Wood filler are sold in
different shades, usually we can't find an exact match. So, buy one darker
and one lighter. After the stain, take some darker and some lighter, and mix
them up. Depending on your skill level, your mix could get very close to
the desired shade. Of course, always err on the darker side. | C*******d 发帖数: 15836 | 16 Thanks for sharing your great experience. I had close to zero knowledge
about stain
but your sharing really helps a lot. I had my dad stained my deck a couple
years
ago, we did the filing and they stand out horribly clear and annoying.
Although I
can live with that, I know we are way off from the right way to do it. Now
after
reading your posts I know exactly what to do. Now I can even think about
adding
stain to my long needing wood floor which was the least thing I would try
before I
read your posts:)

| m***y 发帖数: 14763 | 18 I can't figure that out, so enlighten me a little bit.
My understanding is it's just "stainable", which means it would darken after
stain, but how could it darken to the right shade? I mean, even if you
apply the same polyurethane to different kinds of wood, the colors you got
on different woods are different. So, even if the maker can adjust the shade
of the wood filler after stain, which shade should they match to? Oak?
Hickory? Maple? Walnut?
Besides, isn't it an overkill? Anyway, we don't putty before stain.
