Metal framing studs typically cost less than wood studs. This cost
savings is somewhat mitigated by the cost of electrical boxes, plastic wire
grommets, screws and moldings.
Convenience
Metal framing studs are more convenient than wood studs because they
are lighter and easier to transport. Also, using metal studs eliminates
messy sawdust piles during cutting.
Strength
Lack of strength is a major disadvantage of metal framing studs.
They can only be used for interior walls, and cannot be used for hanging
heavy cabinets or mirrors.
Corrections
Mistakes are more simply corrected when using metal studs. Because
metal studs are fastened with screws, they are much easier to move than wood
studs.
Stability
Unlike wood, metal studs are not subject to warping and cracking,
making them a more stable long term choice. They only require a sill gasket
or vapor barrier to prevent rusting.
