bad so try to avoid them as much as you can. Instead, use organic
alternatives or just manual labor.
However, if one is fine with occasional chemical use, herbicides are very
effective tools against the majority of weeds. The goal is to use them so
you can get to a stage of good soil as well as healthy and thick lawn as
soon as possible such that you don't need to use chemicals any more when
occasional manual pulling is good enough.
If you follow the labels carefully, most of the time a herbicide won't hurt
too much the good grass it targets (otherwise it isn't allowed to be sold or
nobody will buy it). Even if the good grass is hurt somehow, they should
be able to recover very quickly.
So always follow the labels carefully. The same herbicide may be safe for
one type of good grass, while it can kill another type. This also means you
should know the type(s) of your good grass before using any herbicide.
