the world was found dead in Thousand Palms on Sunday after hiking in record-
setting heat.
Alan Hogenauer, 71, had been out with his wife and son in the Coachella
Valley Preserve on Saturday afternoon as temperatures rose above 120 degrees
, relatives told The Desert Sun. The mountainous terrain includes winding,
rocky trails and little shade.
His family decided to turn back because of the heat but Hogenauer wanted to
forge on, his relatives said. Sometime after they left, he called them for
help, saying he needed water.
When Hogenauer’s wife and 12-year-old son couldn’t find him, they called
the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department to report him missing about 3:20
p.m. Saturday.
